Newry-based company Resonate Testing has announced a £475,000 investment to establish the first battery testing facility on the island of Ireland.

This expansion positions Resonate Testing as a leader in certified lithium battery testing, serving industries such as eBikes, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, aerospace, and medical sectors. The investment will create five high-quality jobs and is projected to increase the company’s turnover by 50% by June 2026.

The new facility, supported by Invest NI, is the first battery testing centre in Ireland and one of only a few across these islands. It will meet the growing demand for battery innovation and safety testing, while strengthening the region’s position in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and green technologies.

Resonate Testing’s commitment to sustainability is evident, with the company well on its way to generating 100% of its own energy. The creation of five high-quality jobs in Newry and the company’s projected growth underline the significance of this investment for the local economy.

Invest Northern Ireland has provided support to help develop the facility and purchase equipment. The centre features an explosive and fireproof chamber, multiple battery abuse test rigs, a preparation area, and advanced sensor equipment.

Tom Mallon, Director at Resonate Testing, said: “For nearly a decade, we have offered specialist engineering test facilities to the aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors. This new battery testing facility is a milestone, positioning us at the forefront of the rapidly growing rechargeable battery sector.”

He added: “Through mechanical and environmental testing, we ensure batteries perform in the most demanding environments. Thanks to Invest NI’s support, we have expanded our capabilities while advancing our net zero ambitions and contributing to sustainable solutions for the evolving battery sector.”

Currently, lithium batteries in the UK and Europe are self-certified. However, increasing regulatory pressures and restrictions on transporting batteries via aircraft or courier services present significant growth opportunities for Resonate Testing.

John McKibben, Invest NI’s Southern Regional Manager, said: “We have supported Resonate Testing since its establishment in 2015 through R&D, skills development, and export growth. Our financial assistance for this investment has enabled Resonate to carry out building adaptations and purchase state-of-the-art testing equipment. This facility will not only boost Newry’s economy but also strengthen Northern Ireland’s reputation as a leader in battery testing and innovation.”
