Manufacturing NI was joined by Diversity Mark and Vidrala UK & Ireland (formerly Encirc) for a practical webinar exploring how manufacturers can create more inclusive workplaces, attract and retain talent, and support workforce development.
The session highlighted some important workforce challenges, with 25% of Northern Ireland vacancies classified as skills shortage vacancies and 76% of jobseekers considering workforce diversity important when choosing an employer, according to research presented by Diversity Mark.
With one in four manufacturing workers expected to retire within the next decade, businesses also face a growing challenge in replacing experienced employees and retaining valuable skills and knowledge.
Key takeaways included:
-
Listen to employees and review workforce data to identify barriers and opportunities for improvement.
-
Establish staff-led groups to give employees a voice and encourage involvement across the business.
-
Involve senior leaders and frontline managers to make inclusion part of everyday workplace culture.
-
Create an environment where employees feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas and discussing their individual needs.
-
Use frameworks such as Diversity Mark to set measurable goals, access independent feedback and support continuous improvement.
The session offers practical insights and real-world examples for manufacturers at any stage of their inclusion journey.
