ndustrial Derating
Defending industrial derating for Northern Ireland’s manufacturers.
Manufacturing NI was established in the early 2000s in direct response to the proposed removal of the Industrial Derating Policy which provides a 70% reduction in business rates for over 4,500 manufacturing properties. By safeguarding this critical support, we’ve delivered more than £1 billion in savings since 2007, currently saving the sector £71.5 million annually.
Industrial Derating has long been a cornerstone of support for manufacturers, enabling reinvestment in people, products, and premises. Without it, Northern Ireland would lose a rare and essential competitive advantage, with serious consequences for jobs, growth and export capability.
In 2024, our evidence-led approach and direct engagement with the Finance Minister helped ensure the policy remains in place until at least 2027. As the policy enters long-term review, Manufacturing NI will continue to provide evidence, analysis and industry insight to government departments and policymakers in order to secure this critical support as part of a wider strategy for long-term resilience and competitiveness in the sector.
