Welcome for CMA Determination on Firmus Energy
MNI are pleased with the final Determination from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on the Firmus Energy Price Control.
NI manufacturers endure the 2nd most expensive final delivered gas prices in Europe so it is critical that regulators, market operators and energy firms themselves are as efficient as possible to ensure competitive prices.
We did not believe that it was necessary for Firmus to take this price control to the CMA and the result has confirmed our view that the Utility Regulator’s determination was balanced and fair.
Despite this result, we are deeply concerned about the new legislation upon which disputes are run. The new rules, in our view, effectively give companies a ‘free shot’ at increasing their income at the expense of underrepresented consumers. It is consumers who ultimately, always, pick up the costs.
The System Operator for NI (SONI) have a case lodged with the CMA and the Final Determination on NIE Networks is due this week and could go this same route given the rules provided to the CMA. These appeals result in an increased workload, huge expense and the focus taken off the more important task of energy firms and regulators providing competitive prices for already which hard pressed consumers.
