United Call for a Manufacturing Strategy
MNI and Unite the Renew Calls for a Manufacturing Strategy on news of redundancies at a number of manufacturers
It has been a difficult month for manufacturing companies and workers with news of job losses in North and East Antrim, Belfast and the North West.
The impending closure of Michelin in Ballymena is a particularly devastating blow to the workforce, the Mid, East and North Antrim area and NI’s reputation as a manufacturing base. Coming on the back of the closure of Patton’s and the imminent closure of JTI Gallahers this will have a devastating impact on many families and the local area where 1 in 5 jobs is a manufacturing job.
MNI, local management and some local politicians have been warning for some time on challenges faced by manufacturing companies by the costs of doing business, particularly energy prices. This must be a huge wake up call for policymaker and regulators to provide a market that can allow large energy users to compete globally and indeed compete internally for the much needed capital to invest in plant.
It is time for the NI Executive to commit to a manufacturing strategy for NI. We join Unite The in calling for urgent action to protect our manufacturing base and create the conditions to allow manufacturers to grow.
MNI have set out a route map in our "Call to Action for Manufacturing" (link below) published earlier this year. Action is needed, particularly on rates, energy and labour areas.
