Salary threshold system
In June 2019, the former Home Secretary commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to carry out an in-depth analysis of potential future salary thresholds determining the best mechanism for calculating the salary thresholds and the rates at which they should be set. The threshold recommendation of £30,000 is UK-wide.
Manufacturing NI is committed to ensuring that the needs of the industry are met and have fully engaged with the MAC communicating the views of our firms. We believe that the proposal to increase the minimum salary thresholds for Tier 2 to £30,000, will have a disproportionate impact on manufacturers in Northern Ireland vis-à-vis employers in other parts of the UK, due to the lower salary levels offered here, our unique business profile and the acute shortage of appropriately skilled labour in the region.
In addition, following Prime Minister Johnson’s appointment, the MAC has been asked
to carefully consider how the ‘Australian-style’ points based system might work in the UK. In this call for evidence, The MAC will consider how points could be awarded to prospective migrants for different attributes, such as educational qualifications, language proficiency, work experience and willingness to work in areas or sectors with a shortage of workers. The salary thresholds will also be considered in the context of this immigration system.
In light of these concerning proposals, Manufacturing NI is urging manufacturers to take a few minutes to complete the survey link below so that we can represent manufacturers in a collated response.
To ensure sufficient evidence is available, please ensure that a representative with knowledge and experience of recruitment of migrant workers and possibly tier 2 visa scheme recruitment completes the questionnaire.
The survey link will expire on Friday 1st November at 5pm so that we have sufficient time to prepare our consultation response by the consultation deadline.
