MNI Call on Assembly Finance Committee on secure Industrial Derating
Manufacturing NI provided evidence to the NI Assembly Fiance Committee on non-domestic rates on 16 January.
The Committee are taking evidence from business associations in its role in providing scrutiny on the plans and policy of both the Minister and the Department of Finance.
CEO, Stephen Kelly, outlined the importance of retaining the Industrial Derating policy secured by Manufacturing NI in 2007 which sees all manufacturers rates capped at 30% of the property value. Despite this, local manufacturers pay the second highest amount per business than all other sectors apart from energy.
MNI encouraged the Committee to scrutinise the 'rate poundage' - the sum of the regional rate set by Stormont and local rate set by the 11 local Councils - to build a bigger rates base with everyone paying at least something.
