Made in Northern Ireland Round Table
Northern Ireland's manufacturing sector is bracing itself for some turbulence in the coming months and years. The threats posed by Brexit are put most sharply into focus in Northern Ireland which is of course on the physical and metaphorical fault line between Europe and the UK.
But, despite this, the sector has grown strongly in the first half of 2019, displaying growth of almost 3 per cent in the first quarter, matching most other regions in the UK – and even outperforming some of them. There is a definite ‘let’s just get on with it’ attitude within the Northern Ireland manufacturing sector which has had a very positive effect on performance and productivity.
This attitude was clearly evident at the recent Made in Northern Ireland Roundtable. Most of the winning companies – and some of those shortlisted – were in attendance in Belfast. The discussion focused on the growth strategies of the manufacturing businesses, how investments are driving this growth, how they are approaching the Brexit issues and how the sector needs to change the perceptions of the industry to attract young talent.
