Details of New UK Immigration strategy
The UK Government has today published a comprehensive policy statement detailing its proposals for the first stage of the new immigration system. As expected, the Government has accepted the majority of the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) recommendations, which were issued just a few weeks ago.
In summary, a new Points Based System will be introduced, based on the same principles as the Tier 2 (General) framework for those coming to the UK with an offer of employment. The current Global Talent Scheme will be expanded to include EU nationals. Further changes for non-sponsored migrants are likely to be introduced over the coming months. The proposals will take effect from 1 January 2021, however it is intended that the new system will be open for applications from Autumn 2020.
