Challenges to Digitisation - Skills & Labour Shortage
A highly skilled workforce is crucial to digitisation and the future of manufacturing and heightened investment in people is essential. That said however, skills and labour shortages are a real threat to the industry aggravated by the uncertainty of Brexit which has seena fall by 26% in the number of EEA workers adding further pressure to an already tight labour market. This migrant labour is crucial to the success of the local economy as it fills gaps in both low-level and high-level jobs and is particularly relevant to the manufacturing sector.
Proactivity and planning are needed now, and it is thus important to understand the specific needs with respect to labour requirements and training. It is fantastic to see the great work initiated by Mid Ulster Skills Forum and The Mid Ulster Council in this regard and I had the pleasure of attending the launch of their Skills report and action plan in the Emerson building in Cookstown in October.
